About this work
A lithographic caricature from the journal La Caricature, plate 376 and 377, shows a city street filled with soldiers on horseback and on foot in a violent scene. In the foreground a bearded figure in a turban sits on a platform among newspapers and a bag of money, while onlookers under an umbrella watch from the right. The work is an free imitation of a painting by Horace Vernet depicting the massacre of the Janissaries.
