About this work
The painting by Edmund Blair Leighton, The Charity of St. Elizabeth of Hungary, shows a haloed woman in a red gilded gown and white veil offering a loaf of bread to a bowing figure in an orange headscarf and dark cloak. Behind them a crowd of women, children and an elderly man waits beneath carved stone arches and a pillar, with a basket of bread held at the left edge.
