About this work
This painting, titled Le marché Saint-Martin, vers 1835 by Jean Baptiste Lecoeur, shows a city market square in warm early light. A tall fountain stands beside a covered cart and arcaded market stalls, while women in period dresses and a man in a red coat move through the scene. A distant dome rises above the rooftops, giving the view its urban depth.
