About this work
This black-and-white ink illustration by Harry Clarke, titled 'He Takes the Gift with Reverence and Extends', shows a kneeling man in an intricately patterned coat presenting something to a woman in a voluminous black gown and towering hairstyle. Observers in powdered wigs and ornate costumes stand around them in a richly decorated room with stippled wallpaper and a carved table.
