About this work

This 1919 poster, titled WorkerSovdepiya and attributed to an anonymous 20th-century artist, shows a gaunt, hollow-eyed man in a worn shirt and trousers seated on a heap of paper banknotes. His raised hand and open-mouthed expression give him a mocking, ironic air, while the Cyrillic caption at upper right reads 'Happy worker in the Soviet'. The drawing uses exaggerated, thin limbs and soft shading in sepia tones.
