About this work
This 1889 lithographic poster advertises the Delprade Mystère illusion act at the Exposition Universelle in Paris, titled Substitution. A woman in a red costume and a man in a yellow patterned jacket hold a striped cloth while a translucent figure appears behind them and a green horned devil looms above a red drape. The text promises the trick works without trapdoors, mirrors, or light effects, within three seconds and without contact with the stage floor or wings.
