About this work
This oil painting shows a woman seen in profile, wearing a dark velvet-like dress with a white lace collar fastened with pearl-like beads. She holds a bouquet of pink roses against her chest, and her dark hair is arranged in a low chignon with loose strands. The loose, visible brushwork and muted gray background are characteristic of the painting, which is dated 1881 and attributed to Giovanni Boldini in the Clark Art Institute collection.
