Dahl's father was a modest fisherman in Bergen, and a collection taken up by his mentor Lyder Sagen sent him to the academy in Copenhagen in 1811.
He went to Dresden in 1818 and became a close friend of Caspar David Friedrich, and from 1823 the two families shared a house. Most often he painted the view of the Elbe outside his windows in different kinds of light. He longed for Norway and made several trips home, mostly painting the mountains. He died in Dresden, and his remains were later brought back to Bergen. Browse 324 works by Johan Christian Dahl from 52 museums.
