Adriaen van Ostade spent most of his life in Haarlem, painting tavern scenes, village fairs and the cottages of ordinary country people.
He was the eldest son of a weaver from the hamlet of Ostade near Eindhoven, and he took that name as a painter. The RKD says he became a pupil of Frans Hals and joined the Haarlem Guild of St. Luke in 1634. A few years later, Rembrandt's influence suddenly changed his style. He ran a workshop whose pupils included Jan Steen, and he died in Haarlem in 1685. Browse 371 works by Adriaen van Ostade from 61 museums.
